Coming off a 17-2 romp in game two, Purvis came right back relying heavily on sophomore pitcher, Robert Marzoni. Purvis(20-11) defeated Sumrall(32-5) Wednesday night, 6-4 for the 3A South State crown. The Tornadoes will travel to Jackson to take on Nettleton in Trustmark Park in Pearl at 4:00pm Saturday for the State Championship. Purvis scored all six runs in the first three innings. Junior, Matt Kukuk led off by getting hit with by a pitch by Sumrall's pitcher, Jake Hawkins. Kukuk scored the first run by advancing to third on a pass ball and by an error from second baseman, Eathan Applewhite by a hard grounder hit by Brice McWilliams. Before the series started, the junior infielder, Matt Kukuk, led Purvis with the highest batting average of .350 and hit one triple. For the series, Kukuk went 4-for-6, had two stolen bases, hit two singles, scored four runs, struck out once and had one walk. Junior pitcher/outfielder, Brice McWilliams(4-2) recorded 37 strikeouts in 42 innings. Has one HR and six doubles. For the series, McWilliams went 2-for-9 hitting a single and a double in game one. In game two, McWilliams was the losing pitcher giving up nine hits, four doubles, three singles and two home runs in 3 1/3 innings. |

Sumrall pitcher, Jake Hawkins gave up five runs in the first two innings. Hawkins walked two and hit three batters and was pulled after a Tyler Barham two-run home run to center field which gave a 5-1 Tornado lead. Dustin Smith came in to finish the inning but not before giving up a run. Junior, Jim Roseberry, came and pitched the last three innings and gave up two walks and two singles. Roseberry ended with two strike outs and did not allow any runs. Marzoni(11-2) was the winning pitcher in both game one and three. Marzoni threw 107 pitches on Saturday and 114 on Wednesday. Marzoni had 10 strikeouts, walked six batters, gave up six walks and 13 runs on 15 hits in both games(14 innings). At the plate, Marzoni struggled in all three games going 1-for-7. Before the series, Marzoni had a 9-2 record with 104 strike outs in 73 innings. Marzoni was also hitting a .323 with three home runs and two doubles. The only bright spot for the Bobcats came when Jake Hawkins hit a solo home run in the third inning. |
