The Sumrall Bobcat baseball team has come alive in 2007 in hopes of winning it all. With a new coach, the Bobcats are 17-1 on the season and 5-0 in division play. First year coach, Larry Knight, left the Hattiesburg Tigers soon after the 2006 season to head up the Bobcats in 2007. Knight produced four 5A state championships in 13 seasons at Hattiesburg.

Sumrall recently beat Purvis in a crucial division game. Jake Hawkins, a two year starter, threw a no-hitter and had 14 strikeouts in five innings giving the Bobcats their 17th win. Jake is 5-0 on the season with an impressive 54 strikeouts in just 22 innings, an average just over two strikeouts per inning. The 5'10"-150lbs Hawkins is a junior who's really impressive not just on the mound, but also hits the ball well with a .472 batting average. Jake plays shortstop when not on the mound. As a sophomore, Hawkins went 6-2 with a 2.60 ERA and had a .354 batting average and hit 10 doubles.

The Bobcats have a few other good pitchers such as Senior, Eric Gill. Gill is currently 3-0 with a 3.32 ERA, striking out 21 batters in 13 innings. Junior, Jim Roseberry, has two wins under his belt along with two saves. Roseberry is batting a consistant .389 on the season. Sophomore, Jared Miller, has great size with a 6'4" 190lb frame who's been clocked in the mid to high 80's. Miller saw some action against North Forrest who struck out eight in four innings.

Sumrall averages just over 10 runs per game. Senior, Dustin Smith, is hitting the ball extremely well who leads the team with a .523 batting average. Smith plays just about every infield position depending on who's pitching. As a junior, Smith ended the season with a .363 batting average. Ethan Applewhite leads the team with five HR's and a .455 batting average. The junior second baseman is a three year starter hit a .390 as a sophomore.
